Flashback Friday

Samurai Cop (1989)

Happy Friday Retronauts! Magnum Crockett here to bring you all a weekly dose of 80’s film nostalgia, and also suggest an accommodating synth album for you to check out. This weeks choice is a cheesy cult-classic action film with comedically dreadful acting, over the top fight sequences, low budget special effects, and an incredibly rockin’ synth score.

1989’s Samurai Cop, written and directed by Amir Shervan, stars Matt Hannon as Joe “Samurai” Marshall, a mullet sporting San Diego cop trained in martial arts who is sent to Los Angeles to eradicate a Yakuza mobster and The Katana Gang. The Samurai Cop and his comic relief partner Frank Washington, tear apart Los Angeles hunting members of The Katana Gang looking for evidence to bring them down. Robert Z’Dar stars as Yamashita, The Katana Gang’s lead heavy who goes toe to toe with The Samurai Cop throughout the film, ending with a clash that can only be described as the most hilarious sword fight sequence in all of cinema.

This film is definitely worth a watch, if not for the exquisitely terrible and humorous acting but for it’s score alone. Composer Alan DerMarderosian assembles a treat for synth score lovers, full of adrenaline inducing tempos and atmospheric tones. Certainly a film score I wish would get a full release.

For those of you looking for an ass-kicking, justice-seeking synth album to accommodate this action packed cult classic, look no further than Street Cleaner’s self titled album. Setting the tone of a city in turmoil and in need of a hero. It is sure to please your ears and tell you an extremely compelling story.

So, if you have some time to kill then give this cheesefest a watch.

Until next week, keep rockin’ my friends.
